Aboard the ship deep-sea bacteria from a depth of 10,000 m were pressurized to 1,000 atmospheres, following which they began to reproduce.

The Pressure Apparatus

As soon as the Galathea was moving towards warmer latitudes, albatrosses were seen flying near the ship. A couple of the birds were caught to be measured and photographed, and then set free again.
