Tanzania Amphibia-Anura / type collection
The fauna of Amphibia in Tanzania can be divided into three "guilds"; one connected with grassland/savanna ("savanicolous"), one with the isolated patches of moist evergreen forest ("sylvicolous"), and a third ("parasylvicolous") connected with dry forest, gallery forests in the savanna, degraded habitats in the moist evergreen forests, etc.
The savanicolous guild is generally found throughout the contry in suitable habitats, while the two forest-connected guilds are found in two areas with no species in common, namely forests in westernmost Tanzania with a fauna in common with central Africa, and an eastern forest block with affinities to forests of SE Somalia, the Kenya coast and Mozambique. While the parasylvicolous fauna is widespread in the eastern forest block with its mosaic of savanna and dry forest, the true sylvicolous fauna is only found in the forests of the Eastern Arc Mountains. The entire sylvicolous fauna here - at least 40 species of Amphibia, including 5 endemic genera - is endemic or near-endemic to these forests.
