Sheppardia aurantiithorax
Beresford, Fjeldså & Kiure, 2004
Current name: Sheppardia aurantiithorax
Topotype: ZMUC 94.059 |
Original description
(pdf - 12 pages, size: 4,4 MB).
A new species of of Akalat (Sheppardia)
Narrowly Endemic in the Eastern Arc of Tanzania |
Additional information
The Rubero Akalat is found in montane forests at 1,800-2,200 m above sea level and so far known only from three highlands in the Eastern Arc: the small Wota forest in the Wota Mountains, the Ukaguru Mountains and Rubeho Mts.
The species inhabits the understoreys of montane forests, mainly plateau forests. Detailed biological studies of S. aurantiithorax are lacking. The species seems to be fairly common within the remaining forests of the Rubeho and Ukaguru Mts. It has been observed feeding in shady parts of the forests, on the ground and on low branches, often flitting wings, and making short spurts and sallies.

NB! The unsexed holotype, cat. no. 93223, collected at 1600 m in the same locality (Mafwemiro Forest, Rubeho Mountains) by J.Kiure, is similar in plumage but in poorer condition. |
