Tanzania is among the African countries with the highest number of resident bird species, and the country has more than 80 so-called Important Bird Areas (IBA).
The Eastern Arc forests are particularly rich in endemics, with both strict and near-endemic species. Most of these forests have been recognized as IBAs and they all require conservation action if they are to last.
