Reptile / type collection

Tanzania has a rich fauna of reptiles, which comes as no surprise as reptiles generally prosper in warm and dry habitats. But it is remarkable that also the relatively moist and cool habitats of the Eastern Arc have a very high diversity. Strictly Eastern Arc endemic reptiles include ten species of chameleons (seven Chamaeleo and at least five Rhampholeon), three species of worm snakes (Typhlops), and six species of colubrid snakes in four genera. A very conspicuous feature of the Eastern Arc is the chameleons, which here show the highest number of species outside Madagascar. Three new species of pygmy chameleon were recently described from the Pare, Nguru and Mahenge Mountains.
