Brazil: Important collection of mammals from the 19th. century (P.W. Lund)

The Lund collection of extant mammals. The present list is an incomplete listing of extant mammals collected by Lund and visiting colleagues (Reinhardt and others). The whole collection (subfosil and recent) was thoroughly monographed by Herluf Winge in E Museo Lundii published between 1887 and 1915. Winge renamed a number of species, and discovered several more species (extinct and extant) in these enormus collections of especially cave deposited mammal fragments. In the list the original names ascribed to the specimes by Lund (and collaborators) are given. The names given or used by Winge are also included, plus the proper current latin names as far as we could make them out with the help of visiting specialists and from Mammal species of the World (Wilson & Reeder, 1993). The Lund collections have, to some extent, been neglected, mostly because they were published in Danish. However some of the species or groups have been treated by present day specialists resulting in a number of publications. Obviously the material includes a number of type specimens. But since Lund did not designate types, we have been reluctant to comment on type status of the individual specimen. The list as presented here is far from complete; a continuation of the work awaits additional funding. We have no specialist on most of the groups, of which especially the rodents are most complicated. We feel certain that there are many incorrect notes in the list. The aim of putting the list on “the net” at this state is to increase the awareness of this important collection and to ask for corrections and comments from specialist.
