THE VERTEBRATE DEPARTMENT OF THE ZOOLOGICAL MUSEUM

The staff of the Vertebrate Department work with the most popular of animals: mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fishes. Regardless of whether they are recent or subfossil, there is a great public interest in vertebrates, and because of the various concerns they raise in society, the Department is often consulted, e.g., in matters relating to legislation and management. Because of the relatively high level of knowledge of vertebrates, they are often used as indicators for environmental conditions. Because of the great public appeal, and the detailed knowledge that can be provided for conservation planning, the Department has close contacts with conservation organisations inland and abroad; it has provided expert assistance to other government institutions on the CITES convention and on research enhancement on environmental issues in developing countries.
