Research enhancement for
developing countries
Together with I. Friis (Botanical
Museum), J. Fjeldså is responsible for research enhancement projects for the
Danish Foreign Ministry, with Makerere University in Kampala (Uganda) and
University of Dar-es-Salaam (Tanzania) in connection with the tropical research
programme. Planning of research collaboration started with University Malaysia
Sabah (under the DANCED programme, the Environmental Ministry, 1996). Research
collaboration is also done as part of the Danish Environmental Research
Programme (Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia), where J. Fjeldså is responsible for
methodologies for biodiversity sampling and mapping. These projects involved a
number of cand.scient. and ph.d. projects, postdocs and student assistants in
the Zoological Museum and in the project countries, a broad network of contacts
and collaboration with other disciplines (botany, conservation, environmental
economics, GIS and remote sensing, anthropology).
