Professor in Entomology, retired, Chinese Academy of Sciences.
I was born in Wujiang, Jiangsu Province, China in February 1923,
graduated from the Department of Biology, Agricultural College, Central University of Nanking,
and received a Bachelor of Agriculture degree in 1944. Then I chiefly engaged in the works of
ecology and human histology in an institute and two colleges, one after another,
before I was appointed to the following work.
Since 1950, I began the work of entomology in Shanghai Institute of Entomology and its predecessor,
Chinese Academy of Sciences, and started to study synanthropic flies in 1953.
My major work is in the families Anthomyiidae, Muscidae, Calliphoridae and Sarcophagidae,
but other flies related to medicine, veterinary science, agriculture and forestry are also interesting to me.
I deal with the work in the light of practical needs, such as fly investigations and vector control,
plant protection and quarantine, comprehensive scientific expedition to the Qinghai-Xijiang plateau,
as well as faunastic studies; and the work has made good progress.
I have published some 130 academic papers written by myself or collaborately as well as 4 monographs chiefly edited by me.
In these works were reported more than 300 species new to science and some new taxa of generic and family rank.
During the course of studying on Sarcophagidae and other families as well,
I enjoyed much the help and support from many colleagues both of home and abroad.
I wish to take this opportunity to express my cordial thanks!
Since 2000, our institute, Shanghai Institute of Entomology, has integrated with Shanghai Institute of
Plant Physiology and has been renamed as Shanghai Institute of Plant Physiology and Ecology,
Chinese Academy of Sciences, located at Fenglin Road, Shanghai 200032.
As for myself, I retired at the end of 1990, and then I have continued my unfinished works with colleagues.
I work at home as a rule, and my permanent address is: Apt. 123, Bld. 1, Lane 302, Shanghai 200051, China.
