World of Flesh Flies
Daniel Whitmore

D. WhitmoreD. Whitmore I am half English, half French and moved to Italy when I was a child. I have a degree in Natural Sciences, obtained at "La Sapienza" University, Rome. During my university years I became increasingly interested in entomology, particularly in the Diptera. The subject of my degree thesis (2004) was an ecological study on the Tachinidae of a small Nature Reserve in northeast Italy. During the preparation of my thesis and during my work experience at the Centro Nazionale Biodiversità Forestale, Verona, Italy, I have learned that a sound taxonomic basis is indispensable for other fields of research such as ecology, biology, etc., and that there is still lots to discover and work on among the Diptera, not only in tropical and subtropical regions but also in Europe.

Since 2005 I have focussed my interests on the taxonomy of Sarcophagidae. I am currently (2009-2010) in the last year of a Ph.D. on the systematics and phylogeny of Sarcophaga subg. Heteronychia (co-financed by Centro Nazionale Biodiversità Forestale "Bosco Fontana" of Verona and Sapienza University of Rome). This project has taken up most of my time, but on the side I have also looked into faunistic, ecological and taxonomic aspects of Italian flesh flies, including the study of their vertical distribution in forests.
