World of Flesh Flies

Back to the Diptera Site

Cátia de Mello Patiu My first experience with insects was during my B.Sc. course in Biology with field and laboratory activities in a project on Ecology of Drosophila in Itatiaia (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), when I discovered the wonderful diversity of flies. As I had developed an early interest for Diptera taxonomy, I was introduced to Dr. Hugo de Souza Lopes, who enrolled me in the training at the Museu Nacional/UFRJ (1980) under his advise and the supervision of Profa. Rita Tibana. Since then I have conducted my research in Sarcophagidae taxonomy, and I have been devoted to the study of the Neotropical fauna. Now, as a professor of the Museu Nacional, I have been trying to stimulate each entomology student to become a taxonomist, mainly in Diptera and especially in Sarcophagidae. But the challenge is only at its beginning!
