The frigate Galathea left Copenhagen on 15 October 1950 and sailed south around Africa to India, where the expedition, exactly like the first expedition, called at the Nicobar Islands.
July and August 1951 were spent primarily on scientific research of the deep sea around the Philippines. From there, the ship continued its voyage to Australia. The expedition also visited Hawaii before sailing through the Panama Canal and back to Denmark.

The majority of the direct scientific results based on material collected during the Galathea 2 Expedition have been published in the Galathea Report series (1956 to the present), comprising more than 4,000 pages in 20 volumes. On these webpages the contents of all papers published in the series are available as searcheable pdf-documents.
For more information, please contact Associate Professor/Curator, Ph. D. Danny Eibye-Jacobsen  or Curatorial Assistent:  Majken Them Jensen
The specimens from Galathea II, described in Galathea Report have been indexed by DanBIF (www.danbif.dk) and are searchable via GBIF (www.gbif.org). A list of taxa can be seen here.

The Galathea 2 expedition also had representative obligations in the harbours it visited. It therefore brought a guestbook in which more than 3000 people have signed their name, even some with their fingerprint.
