We regret to inform that Jens B.
Rasmussen passed away on Tuesday the 3rd of May 2005 after a short period of
illness.
Jens was curator of herpetology at the
museum since 1977. His research area focused on phylogeny and biogeography of
African snakes. During the last years he worked with a comprehensive revision of
the material kept in major collections, with the aim of producing a speciation
atlas for African snakes, and chapters for a biodiversity atlas for Africa, to
be produced at the museum. The project team aims to finalise the dataset of
distribution maps with associated documentation within a year's time, and also
to finalise all analyses of biogeographic patterns of Afrotropical snakes and of
conservation priority analyses for snakes for this biodiversity atlas.
Note that for the time being assistant
curators Mogens Andersen and Abdi Hedayat will handle questions concerning
access to the collections of Amphibia and Reptilia.
